October has arrived! While we all love Halloween, let’s not forget that it’s also National Fire Prevention Month. Fire safety awareness is super important! Did you know that around 358,500 housefires happen in the US every year? The crazy part is most of these fires can be prevented with simple practices and regular care. Just like everything else in life, your HVAC system needs some TLC too. It’s not inherently dangerous, but proper maintenance is crucial to avoid any fire hazards. So, come together with your Loveland Heating & Air experts to spread awareness about HVAC-related fire safety.
Consistent Maintenance
Regular maintenance is key to keeping your HVAC system safe. Make sure to have a licensed HVAC technician inspect and service your units at least once a year – ideally before you start using them for the season. During these visits, they’ll ensure everything is functioning properly and address any potential issues like frayed wires, loose connections, or blocked ventilation that could pose a fire risk.
Change Filters and Clean Ducts
Clogged ducts and dirty air filters not only make your HVAC system less efficient but they also up the risk of fires. When a furnace is left running with a heavily clogged air filter, the clogged air filter blocks off proper ventilation and can allow for the production of unusually high levels of carbon monoxide – which is detrimental to your safety and is also proven to be a fire hazard. So, make sure to replace filters as recommended by the manufacturer (usually every one to three months). Don’t forget to have your ducts cleaned periodically (every 3-5 years) to keep that dust and debris from building up in your ductwork.
Faulty Electrical Components
Faulty electrical components can really be a fire risk, so make sure to keep an eye out for warning signs like flickering lights, tripped circuit breakers, or burnt smells from your HVAC unit. If you notice any of these problems, don’t hesitate to reach out to a professional to get the issue checked out as soon as possible.
Keep Flammables Away
Make sure you don’t store flammable stuff or chemicals near your furnace. They can easily catch fire if there’s a problem with the equipment or it gets too hot. It’s always a good idea to keep a clear space around your HVAC units to lower the risk of a fire. Things like paint cans, cleaning solutions, other chemicals, and flammable items such as cardboard, paper, or fabric should never be stored near your HVAC unit.
Have Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Just about everyone knows how important it is to have smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. But remember, it’s a good idea to have these detectors on every level of your home. Also, make sure to strategically place them in the main spaces and outside your sleeping areas. Don’t forget to test your detectors every month to make sure they’re working, and change the batteries each year. Finally, most detectors have a lifespan of 10 years. You can check the manufacture date on the back of the device to confirm this and replace it when it hits that 10-year mark.
Have a Fire Escape Plan
In case of a fire, make sure you have a well-rehearsed fire escape plan. Everyone in the house, including kids, should know the fastest exits and the designated safe meeting spot outside your home. Make sure everyone understands the plan and is ready to follow it.
By following these HVAC fire safety tips, you can lower the risk of fires, keep your home and loved ones safe, and have peace of mind knowing that your HVAC system is operating securely.
