Being a homeowner comes with its fair share of responsibilities. Keeping up with repairs, renovations, and replacing fixtures & fittings could be quite a daunting task for many. Each year we’ve heard of many myths floating around regarding your residential HVAC system, which ultimately gets homeowners confused. So considering that Loveland Heating & Air decided it would be helpful to clarify a few of those myths up:
Myth 1: Keep Your AC Unit Covered During The Winter
Many bugs and rodents like to seek shelter and warmth in the winter, so you may think that covering it is the best option. Unfortunately, covering your unit may cause more problems than it’s worth. If they’re underneath, your wires can get chewed through, thus causing issues to take place within your unit. In addition, when your unit is covered, it can trap moisture which creates mold to grow. The good news is, your unit was made to be outside and able to withstand all seasons, so keep your unit uncovered and let mother nature take the wheel.
Myth 2: Bigger Air Conditioner Is Better
This sounds pretty accurate when you hear it; however, buying an oversized air conditioner is not a good idea. Simply because it will not provide faster or better cooling; instead, it will frequently cycle on and off, which is wasting your home’s energy. Also, excessive cycling can give you horrible noises and comfort issues, which can shorten the air conditioner’s life.
Myth 3: The Location Of Your Thermostat Doesn’t Matter
I know this sounds so given, right? The truth is your thermostat is the brain of your heating system since its function is supposed to turn off and on. So because of this, wherever your thermostat is located, it is important to get accurate readings of your home’s temperature. Many things can affect the thermostat readings. For example, it might get too hot if placed in direct sunlight, causing inaccurate readings.
Myth 4: Changing Your Filter Once A Year
Because some maintenance you conduct in and around the house is yearly, many believe that you can get away with changing your filter once a year. But unfortunately, that isn’t the case with your HVAC air filters. This is a constant activity that should be done at least once a month. You can get away with some filters a couple of months before changing; however, not once a year. If you haven’t changed your air filter in your furnace this winter, here is your sign. Remember, if your filter is not frequently changed, it can cause massive issues and damages to your home heating and cooling system.
Keeping up with home repairs and maintenance is time-consuming, but as we know, it’s no myth that keeping up with the many systems around your house keeps it functioning properly.
We hope this clears up some of the myths you’ve heard.
